2020 NEWSLETTERS
Good Friends, Good Times, Good Memories
Good Friends, Good Times, Good Memories
2020 has certainly been a year to remember with the COVID pandemic disrupting meetings and activities. Thanks to a great committee we have survived and look forward to 2021 with new members joining the club. Season’s greetings from myself and Helen. We hope you all will have a Happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.
In this edition we commence the recognition of the 30th anniversary of the Club spanning from 14 December 1990 to 14 December 2020. At the same time we acknowledge the current and past 29 presidents of the Club.
We have been able to have our first meeting for the year at our new venue, St Colomb’s Hall in Clayfield. Club activities are starting again with coffee mornings being well attended and enjoyed by all. A walk group has been started planned for the morning on the third Tuesday of the month. The walks are not strenuous so please join us for a ferry trip, walk and coffee.
It seems that at last we can have a meeting on 6 October at St Colomb’s Church Hall in Clayfield. The hall can seat up to 120 but due to COVID-19 restrictions we are limited to 35 attending plus a few at the head table. 1st October 2020 will be the inaugural annual celebration of Probus Day and our Christmas lunch on Monday 14 December is on the 30 year anniversary of the Club’s incorporation on 14 December 1990.
At last we can meet. The Coffee Mornings are well attended and enjoyed by all. The Picnic in the Park was a great success with forty attending. These events enable us to meet in a limited way. The Committee met and approved St Colomb’s Church Hall, Clayfield as our new meeting venue. Pre-registration will be necessary for our first meeting on 6 October, therefore “first in best dressed”.
Your Committee met on 14 July, the first time since restrictions were put in place. The main topic was the venue for our future General Meetings as Merriwee Court will no longer be available to us. Twelve men came to our first Men’s Coffee Morning held for sometime and hopefully the Ladies will soon met for their Coffee Morning as well. The Activities Committee are planning a couple of events.
As your President, I am sorry that I have not been able to chair a meeting. At this time, I cannot see that we will all be able to meet until restrictions are eased, meanwhile we hope to organise a coffee morning for those who are comfortable to attend.
When can we meet again? I believe it will be some months before we can have a meeting. From early July it seems that groups of 100 can meet BUT we must still observe social distancing with four square metres per person. Please keep well and stay in touch with other members.
Another month has passed and we have not been able to meet or participate in any outings. I puzzled how to keep in touch and thought of The Bulletin which I hope you are finding interesting. I urge you to make calls to other club members and stay well and do what your children tell you.
The Times they are a changin. Thank you to last year’s President, the Committee and other members actively involved in running the Club. Regarding the COVID 19 virus, we are a Club of octogenarians at an age when our risk is heightened, therefore please consider our older members and offer help if necessary. (Barry Henzell – incoming 2020 President)
Looking back over my term as President it has been a great year of fellowship within our Meetings, Activities and Outings. The Guest Speakers have been excellent and our 10 Minute Speakers have spanned a wide range of members’ interests. Our Jokes segments make our monthly meetings worth attending with the delicious Morning Teas completing the meetings. (Margot Kirby – outgoing 2019 President)
Our Probus Club 2019 was a master class in friendship. Our Committee planned a very pleasant programme – it is all volunteer work. The younger members coming on board as members must get involved to keep the Club young and vibrant.
